EDGE funds to assist with land acquisition and public infrastructure to locate a sporting goods distribution center in Twiggs County for Academy Sport + Outdoors. Academy will construct a 600,000 to 750,000 SF distribution center on a 150-acre site in the new Twiggs County Industrial Park. Academy is one of the nation's largest sporting goods retailers, operating 95 stores in the southeastern U.S. with 9,000 sales associates. They currently have one distribution center in Katy, Texas and retail stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. As a result of this project, Academy will create 250 new full-time permanent jobs by the end of its second full year of operation and at least 380 jobs by the end of the third full year of operation. Private investment is projected to be over $62 million. This project is in competition with South Carolina and Alabama.
Equity funds to assist with site development costs. The applicant seeks to diversify the local economy through the development of a 115-acre industrial park adjacent to I-16 that was acquired in 2003 with an Equity grant. While the economy of the area has been tied to the kaolin and timber industry, more than 550 Twiggs County kaolin jobs have been lost over the last 3 years due to global competition. In addition, the timber industry has struggled, resulting in the loss of 65 jobs with one prominent company in the area. The county has been successful in passing SPLOST which will be used for construction of infrastructure in the park.
Equity funds to purchase 114.54 acres of property located adjacent to I-16 and GA 96 for use as an industrial park.
