Grant & Loan Awards: Toombs County
EDGE grant funds of $1,000,000 are awarded to assist with building improvements to assist with the location of a manufacturing and distribution facility for Tri-Union Seafoods, LLC d.b.a. Chicken of the Sea International (COS). Chicken of the Sea is one of the top producers of canned/pouched tuna capturing 25 percent of the US market share. The Company, located in an existing industrial building, constructed a 14,000 square-foot freezer facility that is connected to the existing building. The facility is situated on a 27 acre site in the Toombs Corporate Center on US Hwy 1 north of Lyons. Tri-Union Seafoods, LLC (TUS) is a subsidiary of Thai Union International, Inc. (TUI) which is based in San Diego. The parent company is the second largest processor of tuna in the world and with the opening of the Georgia plant; Thai Union Frozen Products anticipates that it will become the largest tuna processor in the world. The Toombs County canning operation is the first in Georgia for TUF and its many subsidiaries.
EDGE funds to build-out specifications in a 100,000 S.F. speculative building located in the Toombs Corporate Center on US Hwy 1, north of Lyons. The Authority applied for EDGE funds in support of the location of Simonton Building Products (SBP), one of the nation's largest vinyl window fabricators. SBP is headquartered in Parkersburg, W.V., and employment at all facilities exceeds 3,600. This project will create 85 new jobs. This will be SBP's eighth manufacturing facility. This project is in competition with Bradenton, Florida.
Equity funds to assist with construction of a 100,000 SF expandable speculative building in the 160-acre Toombs Corporate Center located north of Lyons on US Highway 1. GDEcD provided guidance on the construction of the building which is located on an 18-acre site in the park with exterior walls of pre-stressed concrete 8 inches thick with 2 inches of insulation. The roof will be Duralast vinyl roofing with a 30-foot ceiling height. The applicant commits to maintain the facility while marketing through GDEcD, Georgia Power and Oglethorpe Power. The strategic location of the industrial park, complete with public infrastructure and a spec building, is expected to enhance the overall marketability of the region.
EDGE funds for improvement costs (including road improvements and sidewalks) and communication infrastructure costs to a 60,000 square foot speculative building owned by the Toombs County Development Authority to be occupied by American Standard Companies, Inc./The Trane Company. Trane will lease-purchase the speculative building from the Toombs County Development Authority creating 67 full-time jobs within the first three years and 100 after ten years in addition to its existing 529 jobs.
Equity funds to assist in purchasing a 56-acre industrial park with rail access in Montgomery County. Montgomery and Toombs Counties will invest $15,000 each for engineering and infrastructure.
Equity funds for Water & Sewer infrastructure to serve 260-acre industrial park, Corporate Center, located at US Hwy #1. Regional development will be enhanced as a result of this project.
Equity funds for new terminal construction at Vidalia Municipal Airport, an evolving airport hub for existing and prospective industries in multi-county area.
EDGE funds to facilitate the relocation of Tumi Inc., from 3 buildings located in Vidalia into 2 larger buildings also located in the city. The move will provide an increase of approximately 25% in occupied square footage, and a 40% increase in usable pallet space storage necessary for increase manufacturing requirements due to growing sales. Tumi, Inc. has committed to retaining 169 jobs in Toombs County.
