Equity funds for site improvements at Spence Field, a 1600-acre former WW II airbase and home of the annual Sunbelt Agricultural Expo. The Expo is a major regional event attracting some 200,000 attendees and 1,200 exhibitors. An economic impact estimated that Spence Field activities (of which the Expo is the largest) had a $10 million regional impact in terms of expenditures in the 20-county region. The needed improvements include the construction of a safe, reliable and weatherproof electrical system for the exhibit area which would meet National Electric Code requirements. Due the growth of Sunbelt Expo over the last 28 years, the exhibit area has grown to include some 300-400 service poles which are prone to failure, inconveniencing exhibitors at critical times. The new system would provide weatherproof 200 amp panel boxes, circuit breakers and electrical receptacles and eliminate many of the service poles.
EDGE funds to assist in the acquisition of the 1,068-acre site for the Land Application System. The Authority has applied on behalf of Sanderson Farms, Inc., a Mississippi based producer, processor and distributor of fresh and frozen chicken and other prepared food items. The company markets chicken products primarily under the Sanderson Farms brand name to retailers, distributors and casual dining operators in the southeastern, southwestern and western United States. The company intends to locate a processing plant on a 185-acre site located southeast of Moultrie in Colquitt County that will be annexed into the City. Georgia EPD requires that Sanderson develop a Land Application System for disposal of wastewater. This wastewater treatment facility site is in southwest Colquitt County approximately seven miles from the location of the processing Plant. This project is in competition with Alabama and Texas. The selected land application site is currently in agricultural or forestry production. The treated waste from the processing Plant will be pumped via a large sewer force main to this site. The force main will be installed along the rights of way of county roads and a portion of Georgia Highway 133.This project will create 1400 new jobs.
EDGE funds to assist with facility acquisition of the 158,000 SF Ball Building for a new company, Ice House America, LLC, located in Moultrie. This new company manufactures a retail ice vending system. Moultrie, Colquitt County is in competition with Jacksonville, Florida. The project will create 48 new jobs within the first year, expanding to 91 jobs by the end of the second year and increasing to 157 jobs by the end of the third year.
Equity funds for assistance with marketing and promotion of first annual Southern Wildlife & Outdoor Exposition to be held at Spence Field in 2002. The annual event, featuring exhibits, products, seminars and demonstrations, seeks to develop ecological and agricultural based tourism in SW Georgia.
EDGE funds to assist with rehabilitation of a Moultrie meat processing facility for use by National Beef, creating 163 full-time permanent jobs at start up with an estimated payroll of $3.96 million within 24 months of sustained operation.
